We have chosen a selection of locks in order to illustrate the practical aspects of security and function. The Jacksons (green) locks are perfect for tradional architecture and restoration work. Whereas, we recommend the Modern Lock with Euro cylinder for contemporary situations. Both locks are constructed to very high standards and their strength exceeds that of the surrounding structure, in other words, these locks are generally tougher than the doors and frames into which they are installed. If you are concerned about security you will be comforted to know that our choice in locks has never been questioned by any architect or insurance company. Both locks are beautifully engineered and this is evident in the way the locks feel in use and in their exceptional durability. We stock many more models than are shown here, so, do contact us before ordering.
Understanding "backset"
Doors that are solid, as opposed to hollow core, generally have fielded panels with the frame, or the "stile", measuring either 120mm or 90mm. The stile for older French doors usually measures 50mm.
We aim to place the door handle centered on the stile. Thus the term backset is the measurement from the edge of the door to the centre of the spindle, key or handle, which is usually at the center of the stile.
Backsets are available at 60mm, the most common for latches for internal doors, 54mm usually for more modern French and some front doors, and at 25mm generally for older French doors with a rebate kit.
Security
We automatically assume that any door that needs locking will need a deadlock. The two basic styles of deadlock are the Euro cylinder with a modern key and the skeleton style with a slightly old fashioned key. Security wise they're equal. Modern homes usually have Euro cylinders and classic/traditional homes usually the other.
We favor Jackson's locks for quality, price and value. They have 5 levers and are very secure. They also have excellent solid brass strikers and keepers with very good finishes in polished brass, satin nickel and aged brass. The rebate kits are the best looking in the industry.
We also offer LDH modern security locks that have performed very well with never a problem. They operate a double deadlock with the cylinder operating the latch. The latch a has camber so that closing the door is smoother as it doesn't strike on a flat surface. Another feature we like is the plastic dressing that goes behind the keeper. This saves a good half an hour that it takes to tidy up after the cavity has been made to take the latch and lock.
Internal doors
We have chosen a better quality latch to go with our handles than those being offered in general hardware. The spindle keeper has plenty of movement as it floats. This allows for margin of error in fitting the handles or knob sets.
We do like to see the Jacksons latch used with high quality passage sets like our Ebony and Rosewood heritage passage sets. Jacksons are more expensive but have superior quality both in presentation and the way they feel. It's the solid brass fascia and traditional springing.
For bathroom privacy sets, Jacksons have an integrated latch/privacy turn unit, otherwise we have good quality privacy latches to suit.
We call on other brands when needed for projects that our general stocks don't cater for. Whatever your project, we're sure we will procure the right product for the right result. Any Questions?
